Brasilia replaced Rio as the country's capital city in 1960.
Sao Luis is considered by many to be one of Brazil's most beautiful cities.
It was founded by a French pirate and later named after Louis XIII (of France).
The city's architecture is spectacular; very colonial, with magnificent churches and palaces. Sao Luis is a captivating and dynamic fusion of all the cultures of Brazil - African, indigenous and Portuguese.
This beautiful little town is a bit out of the way but it's definitely well worth the journey.
