Salvador was formerly Brazil's colonial capital city.

Located on the bay of All Saints, this wonderful city has changed little since the days when it served as the slave centre of Brazil. Walking around the narrow cobblestone streets is like taking a journey back in time.

If you come to Salvador, you must visit the Igreja de Sao Francisco. The outside of this church is quite unremarkable but the inside is spectacularly covered in golden leaf.

Also not too far away is the Farol de Barra church; a magnificent 16th Century fortified lighthouse that looks out over the second biggest bay in Brazil.

If you want to get an accurate view of Brazil's colonial past, come to Salvador. Go to the Museu de Arte da Bahia and Museu de Arte Sacra and you'll be enthralled and overwhelmed with 17th century antiques on display.
